Three recently released children’s marine science books in the series Explore with Sam and Crystal are a feast for the eyes and inquiring minds of all ages. The books feature the adventures of two children, Sam and Crystal, who live on the Northwest coast of the Salish Sea. While visiting their Aunt Kate (marine biologist), and Uncle Charlie (commercial fisherman) and their First Nations friend Ada, the children learn about the wildlife above and below the tideline: bald eagles, great blue herons, hermit crabs, clams, sea stars, sea anemones, sea otters, orcas, humpback whales and many more.
The full-colour illustrations by Karen Gillmore are beautiful, detailed and accurate, complementing the wealth of information contained in the text. Throughout, the children learn that everything is connected, and they have a role to play in protecting our animal friends.
Gloria Snively is a professor emerita of science, environmental and marine education in the Faculty of Education, University of Victoria, and a former classroom teacher of primary and junior secondary grades. Her passions include First Nations education, giving natural history workshops and talks, and walking the stunning seashores of the west coast. She lives in East Sooke.
