A PROMISE TO PROTECT is a Violet Downey Award finalist!

Congratulations to Nikki Bergstresser for being a Violet Downey Book Award finalist! A Promise to Protect follows thirteen-year-old Sidney as she finds purpose and healing following the death of her aunt when she joins an effort to save an old-growth forest.
The award is offered annually for the best English language book containing at least 500 words of text in any category, suitable for children aged 13 and under. Previous winners include The Outsmarters by Deborah Ellis, Out of the Dark by Julie Lawson, and Tremendous Things by Susin Nielsen. A Promise to Protect is among five finalists for the 2026 award, the winner of which will be revealed May 29th at the IODE National Annual Meeting.
