Born in Maryland, outside of Washington DC, Brenda J. Brown has lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for twenty years. She is a professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Manitoba, teaching Ecology + Design, Field Studies, Design Research, and various undergraduate and graduate Environmental Design and Landscape Architecture Studios. She has investigated landscapes and landscape architecture of Mexico, the United States, various European countries, and Canada. Brown’s work focuses on revealing natural and cultural landscape ecosystem phenomena, processes and relationships. With a particular focus on sound, her projects have ranged from a hummingbird habitat restoration in Tzintzuntzan, Mexico, to site-specific video installations documenting Winnipeg’s rivers’ spring ice break-up. For several years she has been preoccupied with wind and trees, and most recently, the trees of Manitoba farmstead shelterbelts and those who live with them.
